Before #2

This week everyone is talking about goals and New Year’s resolutions.

Like I mentioned earlier this week, I’m really not a resolution type of girl.  However, if I do make goals, it’s not before the New Year – it’s before something is going to happen in my life – ie. before we got married, before we go on vacation, before we had Wyatt . . .

Before Baby #2 . . .

(Please tell me I’m not the only one who is already thinking about Baby #2 . . .)

(Taken when I was 8 months pregnant with Wyatt.)

I recently came across Baby Making Machine blog, and in her sidebar she has a list of things she would like to do before her second baby – some serious goals, and some fun things.  She says “I want to cherish these moments and live them to the fullest before we become a family of four.”  Hence, the list.

I like that idea, and I decided to make a little pre-second-baby list of my own.  Here is what I came up with.

Before Baby #2

1. Finish the quilt for the spare bedroom.

I would really like to have that spare bedroom finished by the time Baby #2 is on the way.  Will it get done?  I have serious doubts about this one, because I’m a terrible procrastinator, and it’s hard to sew while watching Wyatt.  But that’s my goal.

2. Use the baby carrier as much as possible.

Obviously I can’t carry Wyatt around that way with a big ‘ole pregnant belly, so I’d like to enjoy it while I can.  No, he’s not too big to still be using it.

3.  Write a blog series on homeschooling.

I have it all planned out in my head, but I have yet to sit down and do it.

4. Possibly take a class with Wyatt or take Wyatt to storytime at the library{?}

I’m not exactly sure what this one will look like yet, but I’d like to do something like that while it’s just me and Wyatt.

5. Get Wyatt’s baby book up-to-date.

I’m behind by a few months.

6.  Go on a weekend trip with Derek.

Self-explanatory, and easier done with one child than with two.

7.  Whiten my teeth.

I don’t like to use my bleach trays in the first trimester, just to be safe, so if I don’t do it before I get pregnant I’ll have to wait a few months.

8. Get some pictures of Wyatt on the walls.

I know, almost 11 months later and I still haven’t put up any pictures.  It’s bad.  There is no good excuse.  I’m just not sure how I’m going to pick my favorites, plus it costs a lot to print up pictures.  But I would like to get some up before Wyatt has to share the wall space with his brother or sister.

9. Go to the park and swing with Wyatt.

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while, and I should try to do it before our second bun is in the oven because I can’t swing with him on my lap if I have a baby bump.

10.  Either go swimming as a family, or go to the zoo as a family.

We’ve already done both together, but Wyatt is just getting more and more fun as he gets older, and I think he would enjoy it more since he would know more of what’s going on!  I would like to go swimming or to the zoo again before we’re a family of four.

I think a few of these things could be crossed off the list pretty easily, but realistically, some of the others are going to take a lot more time and effort.

If any of you have any pre-baby, or pre-second-or-third-baby goals, I’d love to hear them!  Though I’m a little nervous to hear them too, because I’ll probably end up thinking of more to add to my list – and I don’t want to make it too long.

I’ll give you a report on how I did after I get pregnant again!

  1. Love your list! Husband and I have pre-first-baby list:
    1. awesome trip with just the two of us (not happening until #2 is complete)
    2. pay off the house (yes, entirely. this one is hard work but we are getting a little closer every pay check and that means closer to me maybe being able to stay at home most of the time)
    3. paint the base boards (we remodeled our whole house and somehow forgot painting the baseboards on 2 of the 3 floors)
    4. I want to do a study of the Bible on being a godly wife and mother, kind of like the men did in Courageous.

  2. I am the same way with the pictures! I have so many cute ones of Jack, and they are even uploaded to Shutterfly. I even have frames ready to go. There are no excuses...

  3. NO, you are not the only 1 already planning for baby #2! I would love to have a second baby soon so theat the 2 can be close in age and so that I can be over pregnancy and body changing (not that I minded pregnancy to much). I also know it could take awhile since we hade trouble getting pregnant with Nathan.
However, we have a list and mostly it just consists of moving! We live in a what I consider a modest, nice house. We don't ahve a dining room or family room so all of his "stuff" and toys are in the living room/kitchen! We had plently of space when we were marriede but now that Nathan is here, we are tripping over toys and baby "stuff"! So, we would like to find a bigger place before we have 2nd baby. Obviously we don't want to live in house debt but just a little more sqare footage and an extra bedroom would be great!

  5. I am not sure that we will be adopting baby number 2 anytime soon but many of those are on my list to this year too. Her journal book I have for her needs some serious updates as she hits these milestones!

  6. oh gosh no! I don't want another baby for AWHILE! I loved being pregnant but newborns are A LOT of work and I'm not anywhere near ready to take that on again!

  7. I think those are perfectly reasonable goals! We're heading toward baby #3 mode and I can't say I have any *major* goals. Hubby and I would like to go on a short vacation alone, and I'd like to maybe lose another 5lbs. We really need to remodel the house to make more room, but that's going to be a huge task. We shall see what the future holds. :) You'll have to keep us posted! (Can't wait to read your homeschool post!)

  9. This is fun :)
No you are definitely not alone. But I think about Baby #2 in the realm of 'wow, I am not ready for that yet' haha! Not because of what it's like to have a baby just because I was SO sick when I was pregnant and I am enjoying my barf-free days to the fullest :)
But before we head down that path again, I really want to lose some weight. I have lost almost all my pregnancy weight but I would really like to lose more, since I was heavier than I wanted to be before I got pregnant with Callyn! And some financial goals as well. Yours are more fun haha :)

  10. I love this idea! I had a list too until we suddenly moved and everything changed completely (obviously God had different plans for our family). I cannot wait to read your homeschool series, it's something I have really considered especially now that we're in Florida and the public school systems aren't that great (although private school isn't out of the question).

  11. This is such a fun idea! Now of course, I'm quite a few months behind you, but I am not thinking baby #2! I would like Adeline to be in the 2-3 age range or so before a second one. :) Justin and I have decided though that baby #1 has just made us want to up our number of babies that come after!

  12. Our goals are "pre-baby" goals since we have not started having kids yet :) We would like to finish our basement - or at least be well on the way to having a finished basement - before we have baby #1. Right now we are in the saving phase of this plan, but hopefully we will be starting work on the basement in a few months :)

  13. ok so I don't have any comments on baby #2. Sorry :( but I am intrigued about your homeschooling blog....get to getting! I am excited to hear what you have to say! :) This is something that has been on my heart lately and I know we have a while to go before we decide but the time will come before I know it! Excited to hear your thoughts!

  15. I totally have a mental list like that before babies come on the scene at all for us!

    1. Go overseas. Anywhere.
    2. Pay off most of our debt, besides the mortgage.
    3. Finish the projects we have planned for our house (backsplash in kitchen, painting because we're still not done! etc...)
    4. Get into the career I actually want to be in so I can work from home.

  16. This is a great idea and I love your list! I would definitely like to take a trip with my husband before our next baby. We never took a honeymoon and planned on taking one before we had a baby, but things don't always work out the way you plan :) Great idea though! Thanks for sharing!
