Four Months Old

My baby boy is four months old!

Our firsts this month included . . .

First time wearing shorts:

First time at a wedding:

First time wearing a ball cap:

First time sucking his thumb:

We kind of relapsed on sleeping skills this month. Wyatt started sleeping through the night at ten weeks, and he was doing it consistently. But in the past couple of weeks he's been waking up about 60% of the time. I'm not sure what's going on - I can't figure out any connection between how well he sleeps and anything else we're doing. Maybe it's just a growth spurt? I don't know.

He's had a couple different giggling spells, but we can't quite seem to catch it on film. He stops as soon as I pull the camera out. But I absolutely love hearing his giggles! It's the cutest thing ever.

Wyatt suddenly stopped taking the pacifier this month. I'm not sure why, just one day he wouldn't take it anymore, no matter how hard I tried to get him to.

And what has replaced it? His thumb. He found his thumb.

Maybe I shouldn't let him do it, but I melt everytime he sticks his thumb in his mouth! He only does it occasionally when he's tired, and he doesn't need to suck his thumb in order to fall asleep, so I'm okay with it for now.

It's so cute, because when he does suck his thumb, he likes to put the other hand on top of his head! I think it's pretty adorable.

I would also say that this is the month that he really found his hands. On May 28th I had him playing on his activity mat, and I went into the other room for a moment. When I came back, Wyatt was hitting one of the hanging toys back and forth. I could tell he was doing it on purpose, because he would hit it and watch it swing, and then hit it again when it started to slow down. He's figured out how to use his hand-eye coordination in order to play!

At the beginning of this month he started "cuddling" with his blankets. When I cover him with a blanket or give him his little blankie/teddy bear toy (his new favorite), he'll grab the fabric and pull it up to his face. I think it makes him feel more snug and secure with the blanket touching his face.

Don't worry, I don't let him do it at night for safety reasons.

He's officially into size two diapers now. The other day when I was changing him, I accidentally grabbed a newborn size diaper that somehow escaped us in that first month - and as I held it up to him, I couldn't believe how big he has gotten! He used to be swimming in his newborn diapers - it's hard to imagine him that small now.

Speaking of growth, we can no longer swaddle him properly. All our swaddle blankets are way too short for him, but he likes to be tucked in at night - it's the signal that it's time to go to sleep. So lately we've just been swaddling him on the sides without folding up the bottom corner - like an open-ended burrito.

My mom was holding Wyatt the other day, and when Wyatt saw me, he smiled and started leaning toward me. That's the first time he's really leaned toward anyone in a controlled way. He was perfectly fine being held by my mom, but I think he just saw me and leaned instincitvely. Kind of like saying "There's my mom!" It made me feel good.

He also calms right down when Derek holds him. Alot of times when he's tired and cranky, I'll just hand him off to Derek, and he'll stand up and walk with him for all of two seconds before Wyatt falls asleep.

The other night we had Wyatt on his tummy, and he was trying so hard to move forward - his little legs were pumping against the floor, and he was so close. Well of course, the next day (June 9th) while I was at work, Derek said he scooted forward on his belly about a foot to get a toy. I came home and cried, because I couldn't believe I missed it. So he's semi-mobile now. Thank goodness I didn't miss him crawling yet - he just needs to figure out how to get his stomach off the floor, and we'll have a mobile baby on our hands! Oh my.

Dear Wyatt Boy,

You are growing so fast! I think I say that every month. You are getting so strong, and you are the happiest baby! You smile so easily, even at strangers, and everyone is always telling me how cute you are. Of course, as your mama, I already know this, and your dad and I are so proud of you! I thank the Lord every day for giving you to me, and I pray that you'll come to know Him and serve Him as you grow up. Just don't grow up too fast. I'm not ready yet.

Love you more than air, Sweet Baby.

Your Mama

He's getting so big and his looks have changed so much! I can't believe it! I'm so impressed that you caught all those "firsts" with a camera. What a great way to document his babyhood :)

Oh my goodness, what a bunch of adorable pictures! He's getting so big, and is absolutely precious. It's just the sweetest thing when they recognize Mama and start reaching for you, just melts your heart! My Sprig started dissing her paci at about 3 or 4 months, and replaced it with two of her fingers. Thankfully she only sucks on them when she's tired, and you're right, it's so cute I have a hard time making her stop (not like you can when you're not looking, anyway!) good thing is that they won't suck them forever. ;)

What a cutie pie! He keeps getting cuter, seriously. What a precious little face. Christian has always been a thumb-sucker, and I actually prefer it. No pacifiers to forget... no going into his room in the middle of the night to replug him. Of course, breaking him of it will be a bit difficult, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it!

Wow it's been quite a month for little Wyatt! And he does look so adorable sucking his thumb :)There's another blog I read who's little boy holds his ear when he's sucking his thumb - how funny that they have to find something to do with their free hand!
