Back From Out East

We just got back from vacation earlier this week! We had a wonderful time and did a lot of fun things, despite Derek getting sick for the first half of the week, and Wyatt developing a terrible diaper rash the second part of the week (it figures, but we didn't let it ruin our trip).

We visited Derek’s brother and sister-in-law for vacation this year, and it was so great to spend time with them, and to have them meet Wyatt for the first time! They also surprised us and rented a beach house for us to stay in for the last half of the week (they are so sweet and generous), and it was so cool to stay right next to the ocean like that.

Things I don’t have pictures of, but would like to remember:

Wyatt did great on the flight, and he even got some little wings from the flight attendant.

My sister-in-law surprised me by taking me for a manicure and pedicure – I had never had a pedicure at a salon before, so it was a highlight for me!

When we were swimming in the ocean, some dolphins swam by not 20 yards away from us. I spotted them first, because I was keeping an eye out for sharks - I never should have watched Jaws. But I read that when dolphins are nearby there probably aren’t any sharks in the same area, so it made me feel better, not to mention it was super-exciting to see dolphins for someone who rarely visits the ocean!

Here are some pictures!

We visited the governor’s mansion in New Bern.

Got some ice cream and Turkish delight in the “purple house” that Kara suggested (still hoping we can make it work to meet next time, Kara!).

Visited Kitty Hawk.

Visited a lighthouse.

Walked by the ocean and down a pier.

We went to stay at the beach house on Thursday.

We spent several hours on the beach.

We went to Wilmington and visited the U.S.S. North Carolina battleship memorial.

Wyatt stayed with his aunt and uncle so that Derek and I could take a walk on the beach.

And besides those things, we just spent time with Derek’s brother and sister-in-law, did a lot of reading and relaxing, and we played Settlers of Catan several times (we had never played it before – it’s a fun game)! We were able to relax and recharge. Wyatt did wonderfully, and I’m sure he must have grown an inch while we were gone (he went through a growth spurt that week).

Overall, it was a great first family vacation!

Okay, now fall can officially begin . . .

Yeah for visiting NC (I thought I recognized the airport in your picture yesterday - sorry if that sounds stalker-ish). :-). We love visiting the beach in Wilmington but haven't visited the ship yet we will have to do that. I'm glad your trip was successful for the most part! I hope everyone is feeling better now.
