Compulsive Grocery Shopping

A few weeks ago, Derek and I went grocery shopping together.  We don’t go grocery shopping together very often, and when we do we usually split up so we can get everything done twice as fast.

This time, however, we ended up just sticking together.  I knew we needed some more canned goods, so we headed down that isle.  When we came to the diced tomatoes, I stopped and grabbed a couple cans.  I was about to put them in the cart when Derek shouted “NO!”, and snatched them from my hand.

Okay, he didn’t actually do that.  But he did stop me from putting them in the cart.

Apparently our cupboard is overflowing with cans of diced tomatoes.  Why?  Because apparently I buy some almost every time I go to the store.

I never really thought about it before, but I realized it’s true.  I buy a lot of diced tomatoes.

I buy it because I have this idea in my head that we are always running low on diced tomatoes (even when we aren’t), and that I need them for almost every meal we make (which, when I think about it, we actually don’t).

I’ve discovered that packets of chili seasoning are the same way.  Whenever I do a big shopping trip and I go down the seasoning isle, I always buy 1-3 chili packets, because I think that we are running low and we need them (actually all the seasoning packets are bad for this, but especially chili).

I currently have seven chili seasoning packets in our cupboard.  And we don’t eat chili that often.

Why this compulsion to make sure we have plenty of tomatoes and chili packets?

I have no idea.

I didn’t even know I did this until Derek brought it to my attention.

Please tell me I’m not the only one with weird grocery-buying habits.

I'm like that with shredded cheese! Every time I'm at the store, I feel the need to buy more, but there are plenty of bags sitting in my refrigerator at home.

My parents are like this! When I took over grocery shopping at their house a discovered 35 packets of gravy and 7 packets of mashed potatoes! I told them not to buy any more of those things, lol. The only time they make gravy is for thanksgiving and Christmas!

I am the SAME way with diced tomatoes. Agh! In my mind they are such a staple, so I always feel the need to grab a few. I canned quite a few jars of tomato sauce this year, so that has helped me curb the bad habit. I have started making a habit of looking at the pantry before I do any grocery shopping. I'm bad about making a mental shopping list, instead of writing down what I need. It really does help!

lol, I do this too, but for completely different reasons. There are a ton of things we can't get on our side of the border so I've become a "hoarder," of certain food items. Not bad enough to be on a tv show yet though :)

ha! love this! this is why I sincerely try to keep to my list when shopping, even if it means making a quick second stop because I forget something!

my husband does the same thing with taco chips and gravy packets!!! All the time, if I ask him to pick up 1 thing ( typically milk ), he'll also grab gravy ( even though we have like 10 ) and nacho's ( 4 bags already! )...Just in case he says!

Bahahaha. For this exact reason I used to have about 20 cans of black beans! Oh and way too many things of strawberry jam. I have since stopped buying them and try to look in the cupboards before I go and change my list accordingly :)

This made me totally laugh because I do the exact same thing. We still have things in our pantry from when we lived in NJ about a year and a half ago and I continue to buy random things that we don't even need :) At least you know you will be good if you ever decide to make tons of chili!

LOL! I do the same thing. It is diced tomatoes for me, also! And kidney beans and snack crackers for hubby's packed lunches. I get paranoid that I am going to run out! You are not the only one. :)

I buy eggs every time I am at the store. Yes, we do eat a lot of eggs, but sometimes we will have up to 3 dozen in the fridge from my compulsive egg shopping habit. I HATE running out of eggs, especially in the middle of cooking!

very funny! I tend to do that with canned veggies. I've tried to get better though by taking inventory before I go...easier said than done! :)

hhaaha! You're not the only one! I'm actually the same with diced tomatoes! I feel like I usually need them to throw into something.... I have 3 cans in the cupboard right now... I'm also AWFUL with hot sauce. We have 4 HUGE bottles (like the 24 oz. kind) I'm always thinking we must be low because my husband uses it so much, when honestly, he only uses a few drops at a time. Heehee. Oh well, the worst is that I always leave the grocery store and realize once I get home that I forgot something necessary... like toilet paper or yogurt (a daily staple for my 2 year old!) I'd rather have a stocked pantry then no toilet paper!!! ;) ;)

I don't think your the only one. My Mum does it with fresh milk and bread. Whenever she goes to the shops she will buy either bread or milk! We currently have 4 bottles of milk and 4 loaves of bread in our freezer!

That's hilarious because I buy the same two items compulsively! Don't feel bad! It takes too long to take inventory before you leave the house to go to the store, don't you think? ;)

I am the same way with Rotel and canned veggies!

Haha! I'm the same way with taco seasoning. I have no idea why. We eat tacos a lot I guess, so I automatically just throw a couple packets in my cart whenever I'm shopping
