Gwendolyn at Half A Year

My sweet girl is half a year old!

Miss Gwendolyn has been up to a lot this month.

(We can finally do her biggest bow!  So cute.)

She sat for 10 seconds all by herself on May 28th, so right around 5 months!  She's been slowly getting more stable.  I think she will do well for her six-month pictures.

We started her on rice cereal on May 30th.  She wasn't too sure about it at first.  We started green beans on June 20th, and she liked those better.  She tried sweet peas on June 24th, and she actually seemed to like those!  We also started supplementing with formula this week (my body just isn't quite keeping up with her anymore - it happened around 5.5 months with Wyatt too).

She found her thumb on June 6th - I just looked down at her and she was sucking away!  I think it's so cute, and if she can learn to self-soothe, I'm all for it.

Gwen also got to meet her Uncle Jeff and Aunt Rae this month since they are here visiting!

We have an appointment next week, and I'm curious to see how much she's grown and if she's still measuring tall.  I packed away more of her clothes this month, but thankfully the summer clothes seem to still be fitting well!  She's in some 3-6 month clothes, and some 6-9 month clothes.  And a couple 12 month outfits, but only for the brands that run small.  Her feet are around a size 2 still, and she's between size 2 and size 3 disposable diapers.

She seems to be liking the solids that we've tried so far!  I'm using the same strategy as I did with Wyatt and I'm introducing all the vegetables first.  Trying to keep that sweet tooth at bay, though I'm not sure it worked with Wyatt since he hit 15 months and stopped eating vegetables altogether, but it's worth a try.

I've also decided that I think she's over the milk sensitivity!  I decided to try a few processed-milk items around 5 months (like milk baked into things), and she didn't have a reaction.  So I added in a little butter, and nothing.  Then I tried cheese and ice cream, and she was still good! I cannot tell you how excited this makes me.  The only thing I didn't try is a straight-up glass of milk, and that's mostly because the dairy was upsetting my stomach a little after not having it for so long . . . but we tried a milk-based formula and she seems to be doing fine.  This is definitely a PTL (Praise The Lord!) moment - I'm so thankful He healed her stomach so quickly!

Her hair is starting to grow in thicker, and her bald spot in the back is starting to fill in.  I also feel like her eyelashes are growing longer.  She is so pretty.  I think she has the prettiest eye shape!  She's going to be a knock-out when she grows up.

Sleep - oy vey.  Let's just not talk about it.

No, I have to talk about it for future reference!  It's honestly not that bad, just not as good as I'd like.  She is waking up at least once a night right now.  She really hasn't slept through the night since she was four months old, and I think this is my fault.  Between 2-3 months old I got a little lax and let her fall asleep while nursing every evening.  Then I went to get her every time she made a noise at night for fear of her waking Wyatt up.  Then I had to feed her, so she got used to eating whenever she woke up in the middle of the night instead of learning to roll over and go back to sleep.  Hence, I messed up her good sleep habits.  I'm sorry, Gwen.

I tried watching the Sleep Easy solution DVD to see if it would help get Gwen into better habits, and though we have applied a few things that have helped, the full program wasn't going very well - that girl can cry!  And I just couldn't bear letting her cry like that for more than a half hour (I'm pretty sure she could have continued for hours), so I dropped it and picked up Babywise again.  We've been establishing a little more of a routine on our days at home, and even though she hasn't returned to sleeping through the night yet, she is going down awake.  And she actually woke up and went back to sleep on her own the other night!  A glimmer of hope.

Bottom line - don't try putting your new baby in the same room as your toddler.  They might be able to handle it fine, but in your desire to keep at least one of them asleep at night, you'll probably give the other one bad habits.  Lesson learned.

As far as her activity goes, I feel like we hit the 5 month mark and she was a different baby.  She was rolling before, but she started rolling a lot more, grabbing at things, staring at and then playing with all her toys, looking at books.  It seemed to happen so suddenly, overnight!  It just took me by surprise.  She is really into her exersaucer, and she loves looking at all of Wyatt's toys and tries to play with him.    She's also reached the stage where everything goes into her mouth.

She is trying so hard to crawl the last couple weeks - it's so cute!  Wyatt was sitting about five feet in front of her the other day, and he laughed at her and she laughed back.  It went back and forth a couple times, and then Gwen started kicking her legs and grabbing at the floor with her arms, trying so hard to move over to Wyatt!  It was so cute.  She can get her knees up under her, and she does push-ups with her arms, just not at the same time yet.

She also has been touching our faces a lot lately, and she'll grab onto my face sometimes and pull it closer.  She grabbed my face the other day and tried to chew on my nose, which I kind of love, because it's like a slobbery baby kiss.

She is super-smiley, and we're always getting comments about what a happy baby she is!  She's also gotten a lot more generous with her giggles, and I still grin every time I hear it (actually I grin with Wyatt's giggles too).  I love hearing my babies laugh!  I've said it before, and I'll say it again - she has the sweetest personality.  She likes to chatter and make squeaky-screechy noises too, which I think is pretty adorable.

She is such a blessing to me, and I love being her mama!

My Sweet Gwendolyn,

You are growing like a weed!  I can't believe how much you have changed this month.  I watch you play with your toys, and I can just see the wheels turning - you are taking in everything around you and thinking so hard about how things work.  You're going to be a smartie.

You love people, and you'll give smiles to everyone who will pause for a minute and talk to you - you love it when people talk to you!  I think you're a pretty social baby.  You always like to face out when I'm holding you, so you can see everything that's going on.

You hate being too hot - so much so that we usually just put you down in a onesie at night.  Your sleepers aren't getting much use these days!  But then you'll get cold in the middle of the night, and I'l bring you into bed with me to feed you and you'll curl your little legs up, and I can feel your ice-cube toes.  As soon as you snuggle against me, you're content again, and I don't even mind that I'm awake in the middle of the night when I can touch your wispy hair and feel you breathing against me.

If you're crying, you calm down as soon as I get you in my arms.  You just like to be with me, and I love having you with me.  You make me want to be the best example I can be, because I know that even now you're watching me.

You are a joy to me, Baby Girl, and such a blessing!   I thank God every day for giving you to me, Sweet Baby.  So glad the Lord chose to give me a daughter, and that you're mine.

I love you more than all the stars in the sky,

Mama

Her sleeping habits match Audrey's almost exactly. I know I should just do it... let her cry it out a couple of nights and we'll be done with that night feeding, but oh man it's so easy to just give her a bottle quick and we all go back to sleep! I'm interested to see how it goes for you.

As always, she's just the sweetest little thing though!

She is so cute with such a sweet Mama! I too had that fairytale notion of my infant sharing a room with her toddler sister-she's still in our room at almost 3 months at night due to her sister constantly trying to reach and crawl into the crib-ha! such a sweet post!

She is so cute, Callie! But oh no, this post means my little Quinn will be six months before I know it, and I'm not ready! But then again, six months is a pretty darn great stage. :) Anyway, congrats!

She's so cute! Makayla had the same top (the blue one) only in orange..love it! And dont stress too much about her sleep habits..you know I rocked Makayla until she'd be asleep until I dont know how old she was (I know she had to of been older than Gwen is now though)..but I'd do it all over again the same way!! Just a little something to pray about..she'll get into a routine before you know it! ;-)
