"Noodles And Doodles" At-Home Date Night

Derek and I don't go on dates very often.  I know there is that whole "Go on a date night every week!" campaign, and while I like the idea, it's only a dream for us (at least right now).  When you live in a rural area, have three young kids, and are slightly paranoid about who you allow to watch your children, there is only so much you can do.

Since we don't go out all the time, I think it's fun to change up our evening routine and do an at-home date every now and then!  I recently got these Laugh Out Loud Pocket Doodles books (by Rob Elliott) in the mail, one for boys and one for girls, so we decided to do a date night surrounding doodling.

Of course if we are going to do doodles, we need to eat noodles.  We ended up titling this date our "Doodle Noodle Date Night Delight" (because we like rhyming like that).

I was contemplating making an elaborate pasts dinner, but for the sake of ease we just ended up having our old stand-by, spaghetti, with side salads.  We put the kids to bed, and decided to eat on the porch and enjoy the late evening air.  It was lovely!

We flipped through our books while we ate, and I tried to decide which doodle to do.  I decided on a page where I was supposed to draw an alien.  If your alien doodles look weird no one will be able to tell, am I right?

We also added a little color to our doodles, just for fun.

Derek picked this picture of an angry boar, and I have to say, I was so impressed with his doodle!  It looks like the book just came that way and he colored it, but he drew the entire body.

These little books were meant for kids, but Derek and I had a lot of fun with them! Each page includes a doodling prompt, with part of the doodle drawn and the rest left to your imagination.  There are also jokes to go along with each page, which I think kids would find really fun!  Sheesh, Derek and I found them fun.  The joke for my page was  "Q. What did the alien say to the flower bed? A. Take me to your weeder."  Ha!

I had seen books like these before, but I wasn't crazy about some of the drawing prompts that were included (involving witches, ghosts, etc.), so I was so excited to see these books were produced by Revel, a Christian publisher.  I have flipped through the books a couple times, and the one for girls has one prompt with a fairy, and one with a monster/fairy godmother, and the one for boys has a page with a skeleton.  Those were the most iffy pages I found, most of the pages involve funny animals and situations.  I feel more comfortable letting my kids use these books when they get bigger than any other doodle books I've seen.

I would probably recommend these books for kids at least 7 and up, and maybe just take out the iffy pages if your younger kids would be bothered by them.  I think kids who are in upper elementary would have the most fun with these!  I am planning on hanging on to them until the kids get bigger - they would be great for road trips!  At least if Derek and I don't fill them up by then...

We had a lot of fun eating dinner and laughing about our doodles, and we decided we will most definitely be doing this date again!  Who says doodle books are just for kids?

Do you do a weekly date night?  Have you done an at-home date?  I'd love to hear about it!

What a FUN idea for an at-home date night. I would totally get giggles out of fun jokes and doodles. It's sometimes hard to find at-home date night ideas that don't involve movie watching (our fall-back, which is fun sometimes!) but this would at least get us laughing and joking around.

Yum!! I think we are going to have to skip the fireworks this year since rebekah goes to bed at 7:30 :) ...I'm hoping our neighbors decide to pass on setting any off too so as not to wake the sleeping little girl!!

So fun! These would be perfect stocking stuffers ( 4th of July and I'm already thinking about Christmas 😊) for my nieces and nephews!

This is such a fun idea!! I love that you spent quality time with your hubby and it was fun! I think a major thing that you just reminded this single gal to remember for the future is that "dating" your hubby doesn't always have to be going out. It is spending time together that is most important! Thank you for sharing!!
Blessings, Rebecca :)

We ended up skipping the fireworks too! I thought we would go somewhere, but Wyatt kept insisting he didn't want to, so we just stayed home and did some noise makers on our porch. :-)

I love this, and your intentionality with dating each other at home. We are in a similar "don't get on dates often" phase of life and sometimes Inletbit get me down. Instead, maybe I should be intentional about bringing the date night home! :)
