\/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis year was my oldest boy's 10th birthday party, and as his birthday approached in February, we knew we wanted to do a special \"double digit\" party for him. \u0026nbsp;Our kids don't get birthday parties every year, and with five of them we've had to think about which ages we wanted to plan to be party years. \u0026nbsp;Hitting the double digits is a special year, so we were thinking about what we could do to celebrate Wyatt.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOur options for parties outside of our house were limited, with most places requiring limits on the number of people or requiring everyone to wear masks. \u0026nbsp;So we decided to do something creative at home instead. \u0026nbsp;What we came up with was a Nerf gun war\/capture the flag birthday party inside our house!\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESince we have limited space in our house, and since I knew this party could get crazy, we limited our invites to just immediate extended family and one close family friend that we knew would be game for a crazy Nerf war. \u0026nbsp;And it did get crazy, but it turned out to be so much fun!\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWe basically played capture the flag, with the teams divided between the upstairs and downstairs of our house. \u0026nbsp;In order to make our house feel like an appropriate environment for a Nerf war, we took down all our breakables, hung up plastic sheets to divide some of the rooms, moved the larger furniture so it could serve as barricades, and planted buckets of darts in strategic places as reloading stations.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFor food I made cupcakes, layered finger jello, multi-colored white chocolate fudge, and snacks foods like pretzels and Chex mix, with chili for the main dish. \u0026nbsp;We also bought little single-shooter dart guns from the dollar store as favors for all the kids!\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEach team took some time to hide their flag, and each team had a designated \"jail\". \u0026nbsp;People were supposed to freeze for five seconds after they got hit by darts, based on the honor system, and they could be \"captured\" and walked to the jail (the bathrooms), where they had to wait five minutes, or until a jail break. \u0026nbsp;The flags had to be hidden in a place where they were visible from three directions (thought that rule got a little tricky). \u0026nbsp;Everyone got a green or blue bandana and glow stick bracelet, so we could see who was on which team even in the dark. \u0026nbsp;The first team to bring the opposing team's flag back into their territory won!\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWe also came up with \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/playlist\/4QVRfoYmXyfWAewar919Iz\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Ea Nerf War Playlist\u003C\/a\u003E to accompany the mayhem (it's a pretty great playlist, if we do say so ourselves).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: annual event, our local homeschool conference which I've enjoyed for the past three years, was also cancelled. \u0026nbsp;But we've still managed to have some fun and get in the summer spirit anyway! stuff. \u0026nbsp;The last week of May we took off for a road trip to the Gulf Coast! \u0026nbsp;Coronavirus tensions were higher then, even though it was just a few weeks ago, so we packed up all our food and activities in the van, and planned to drive with as few stops at possible. \u0026nbsp;I figured when we got there we'd check into our AirBnB and just keep to ourselves and enjoy the beach.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EI decided to book an AirBnB since when we were planning our trip it was still questionable whether hotels were open or not. \u0026nbsp;I figured it would be nice to have a whole house to ourselves anyway. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EWe arrived at the house at maybe !0:00 PM local time, and basically got the kids settled and went right to bed. \u0026nbsp;When we woke up the next day, we started looking around...and realized the house was not really clean. \u0026nbsp;I guess since you pay a cleaning fee on the AirBnB website, I always just assume they \u003Ci\u003Ehire\u003C\/i\u003E a cleaning lady, and I also assumed they'd be extra thorough in cleaning since they had just allowed rentals again after the virus shutdown. \u0026nbsp;And the \"recent reviews\" said it was \"sparkling clean\".\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Ci\u003EWell. \u003C\/i\u003E\u0026nbsp;The host basically admitted to me that all they did was steam mop the floors and clean the bathroom. \u0026nbsp;There was clutter on top of the cabinets and in all the closets, the closet door was hanging by a hinge and a light fixture was broken, there was dead flies and dust on all the windowsills, thick grime in the dishwasher, grease splattered in the microwave. \u0026nbsp;Dust on all the shelves. \u0026nbsp;At first we thought we could maybe do a quick dust job ourselves, but the more we looked around, the more grime we found. \u0026nbsp;So I requested a refund (only got a partial one), and we decided to look for a hotel instead. \u0026nbsp;The host was rude about it. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EHere's the kicker guys. \u0026nbsp;I was going to leave a review to let other people know that the place was not actually clean, but then I realized that \u003Cb\u003E\u003Ci\u003Eyour review is not published on AirBnB until or unless the host decides to review you as a guest. \u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E\u0026nbsp;So basically I could write a negative review, and the host could just decide not to publish it. \u0026nbsp;Which explains why all the available reviews claimed \"sparkling clean\" when it was clearly not sparkling clean.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003ELet's just say I don't trust AirBnb anymore.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003E\u003Ci\u003EUpdate:\u003C\/i\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E Did a little more research, and it looks like only the HOST will not be able to see your comments until after they review you? \u0026nbsp;If so, that's much better. \u0026nbsp;The wording in the AirBnB emails is confusing.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: x-large;\"\u003E\u003Cb\u003EA Lovely Gulf Coast Vacation Anyway\u003C\/b\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EOnce we left the nasty AirBnB, (and once I got antibiotics for an ear\/throat infection that developed while we were down there - another long story), we actually had a really wonderful trip! \u0026nbsp;We enjoyed a really nice hotel in Houston for a great last-minute deal, saw a movie at one of the theaters that was open in Houston, went back to a hotel in Galveston as soon as one opened up, and spent a ton of time at the beach. \u0026nbsp;I even finally figured out how to handle my curly hair in the humidity on this trip (the trick is to not try to straighten it, and just not care at all). \u0026nbsp;It was so fun and refreshing to go somewhere that felt almost normal, \u0026nbsp;We threw around a few ideas for things to do on my birthday, and we finally settled on going fishing. \u0026nbsp;I love going fishing, and feel like I could really get into it if we had more time\/resources. \u0026nbsp;As it is now, we almost never catch anything because 1) the fishing is not that amazing in our state unless you have a boat, and 2) we have a bunch of noisy little text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003EI got most of the decorations from the Target dollar spot and Hobby Lobby. \u0026nbsp;My friend Danae did the lettering for Georgie's wood sign (which will now live in her room at the new house). \u0026nbsp;I told my sister I wanted a simple sprinkle cake this time (she's the master cake decorator in this family), and she made it come to life! \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;
