A Little Sunshine (Award)

When I was a kid, Focus On The Family had a pen pal program.  You sent in a card with your name and address, and they paired you up with another kid who also hoped to receive some happy mail.  By the time I reached junior high, I had ten different pen pals going.  I still have a bunch of letters from those girls filed away in my closet.

Sadly, I lost contact with the majority of my pen pals, but there are still a couple that I am in contact with today, and one of them is Bethany from Waves And Lilacs!  Pen pals that also turn into blog buddies!?  It doesn't get much better than that.

Anyway, Bethany tagged me for the Sunshine Blog Award a couple months ago.  I am pleasantly surprised that these awards are still around!  If you've never seen one of these posts before, I answer the questions that Bethany sent me, and then award some of my favorite bloggers and pose some questions to them.  It's a fun getting-to-know-you opportunity!

1. How do you balance motherhood and blogging?
Well, I've managed to balance being a mom with keeping this blog running since the beginning, so I've been asked this a few times.  As far as the practical nuts and bolts go, I sit down and type during nap/quiet time, occasionally get away on a Saturday morning to write, and I take pictures randomly wherever I go, just so I have a few images to slap onto a post when I need them.  I make notes in my phone when an idea strikes so I can remember what I want to write about later.
Especially as my kids have grown, I rarely work on my blog when they are awake, which means I've had to learn to prioritize and scale back where necessary.  I love to blog as a hobby, but my kids are way more important than my blog!  I don't want to let it take my attention away from them, and I find that when I keep that in mind I still find ways to squeeze it in.
I've had people ask me how I find the time, and all I can ever say is that you find time for the things that are important to you.  So sometimes instead of reading a book or binging on a TV show, I spend my spare time writing a post or editing pictures.  I think we often have a lot more time than we think we do, if we just learned to utilize it better (that goes for me too!).
2.What is your dream vacation spot?
Italy.  Derek and I have been wanting to go to Italy since we got married.  Our original goal was for our 10th anniversary trip, but since that is this year, it's obviously not going to happen.  Maybe our 20th?
3.What is one item you would need if left stranded on a deserted island?
That depends, how long am I going to be stranded?  Did I get shipwrecked, or am I just being left there temporarily while the boat fills up with gas or something?  If we're talking temporary - my phone.  I'd have plenty of books to read on my Kindle app.  If I have been Bible and some flint (don't make me choose).
Maybe this question was supposed to be more fun, but what can I say, I'm practical.
4.What is your top goal for the year?
I didn't really make goals for the year this time around, but I'd say for the rest of the year my goal is to get organized and into a good daily homeschool routine.  Last year we got our work done but we mostly flew by the seat of our pants, so I'm hoping to form more lasting habits and rhythms this year.
5. What’s your favorite romantic memory with your spouse?
Oo, good question!  The easy answer would be our engagement or any of the trips we've done together.  But my favorite more normal memory is probably our 6th anniversary. My cousin got married on our anniversary, and we had a fun time at the reception.  The kids were running around and dancing, and it was so cute.  But then our song came on, so I handed the baby off to relatives, and Derek and I danced to the same song we danced to on our wedding day.  It was a sweet flashback, and in that moment I just was so happy to be married to him all over again.
5. How did you pick your kiddos’ names?
I have a system.  First we print off the baby name list from 100 years ago from the social security website (we like old name).  Then we go through and cross off anything we hate to narrow it down.  Then we pick our top 10 names or so from what's left.  Then we look up name meanings, because that's important to us.  We narrow it down to 2-3 name possibilities.  With the first few we would pick the final name when we saw our baby's face (to make sure the name fit), but with the last couple we just had one choice and knew our baby's name before they were born!
6. You can only watch one show for the rest of your life. What is it?
Ugh.  Hmm.  I'm going to say Survivor or The Middle.  Survivor would be great because it has 36 seasons or something ridiculous like that (and counting), so we'd be busy for a while.  And we love to analyze that show!  The Middle would be great because it's so funny!  (Have you watched The Middle?  I haven't met too many people who've seen it.  If you watch it, you HAVE to start from the beginning, you won't get half the jokes if you don't.)
7. What is the anthem of your blog?
Hmm, "anthem" feels so high pressure, haha!  I think my hope for this blog is that someday my kids will read it, and will be able to see God's faithfulness in our lives, even when it was hard.  I've been singing the kids a new hymn lately as I put them to bed, and the words kind of encapsulate what I hope the overall trajectory of this blog (and my life) will be.
"To God be the glory, great things He has done."
8. What is one blog post you are MOST proud of?
I've got over a thousand posts on this blog now, so this is a hard question. Skip?  I guess most recently I like my "Things I Regret (And Don't) From My First 30 Years" post.  It's a nice summary of my life and this blog thus far.
9. What do you shoot your pictures with?
I either use a Nikon D5200 with a 50 mm 1.5 f/stop lens, or I use my iPhone 7+.
10. What is your favorite recipe?
Oh, I found this great recipe that we've been loving lately!  It's in a cookbook called One Pot Wonders, and it's the "spicy beef and sweet potato braise".  So good!
11. Who/what inspired you to begin blogging?
I started blogging almost ten years ago now!  Back then, blogs were more like public diaries where you also made friends.  I started to blog for a couple reasons.  First, I loved writing down my thoughts about different things, and for me, it's a whole lot more fun to write if I have somewhere to share it.  Second, I was a young newlywed, and none of my friends were married yet, so blogging was a great way to make friends with other girls close to my age who were also married.  The internet has a lot of problems, but one of the great things about it is how it lets you connect with like-minded people from around the world!  I have friends from all over the country and overseas, all because of this little blog.

On Books And Me (Vlog)

A couple months ago Michelle, from I Hope You Dance, gave me the Sunshine blog award!  I have known Michelle for years (in real life), and I like following her blog, reading about her life, and about all the books she reads!  She is like a super-reader, and I am always amazed at how many books she can read in a year. She shares my love for reading, but she's better at it than me!

I always think these awards are fun, and it's a good excuse to do a vlog.  So watch the video to hear my answers to the following questions!

What's your favorite book genre?
What's your favorite time of year and why?
What made you want to start blogging?
Favorite time to read?
How do you find out about new books? (Goodreads, blogs, friends, etc)
Beach, mountains, or in between?
What is the best movie you have seen lately?
Do you mark (highlight/underline) things in your books such as a good quote?
Predictable books or more mysterious?
What is your favorite snack?
What is your favorite book of the year so far?

Excuse my rambling, and the fact that I am wearing pajama shorts.

I'm throwing this post together at 10:30 at night (and I still have to squeeze in a shower), so I'm not going to take the time to tag individuals now - but keep an eye out on Twitter, because I might tag a few of you there!  I'm sticking with the same questions, because I like the ones Michelle came up with, so if you are tagged (or if you just want to) write a post or do a blog with the same questions I listed above!  I'd love to hear your answers!

Some Q&A (About Me)

It's been a weird blogging week.  Mostly because I've been fiddling with different ideas for my blog design, as well as working on helping one of my blogging friends with her design.  In the end, I couldn't come up with anything for me that I like better than my current design, so I'm just going to stick with it!

Edit: I take it back.  I did change my header.  I finally figured out how to get it the way I want it.  Check it out!  It has rollovers.  Spiffy, huh?

Anyway, on to more interesting things - my friend Jessica at Memoirs Of A Mommy tagged me for the Sunshine award!  Jessica writes about all kinds of things on her blog - life in general, her business, tips, and her journey to become a mom.  She is a "real life" friend of mine as well, and is so sweet.  Go say hi!

The Sunshine Award comes with a list of questions, so here we go.

1. If you had one food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Hmm.  Do I get to dress it up differently?  Probably not, huh?  I'm going to say lasagna.  It would probably take me a long time to get tired of lasagna.

2. What is your greatest fear?

My greatest fear would be my kids not coming to know the Lord.  I can do everything I can to teach them and train them in the way they should go, but in the end I can't really control it, and that's scary.  So I just pray a lot and try to leave the rest in the Lord's hands.  On a lighter note, I also used to be terrified of geese.  A friend's big white goose chased me and my sister around their yard, and I saw the damage those beaks can do!  I wasn't bit myself, but it scared me to death, and for a long time I was pretty skittish around geese. I'm happy to report that I am now over it.

3. Favorite Bible verse/quote.

My favorite Bible verse is 2 Corinthians 4:16-18.  It's a great reminder to me every time I read it to focus on things that will last.

Favorite quote?  Sheesh, I have so many.  But the one that immediately springs to mind is "We are all worms.  But I do believe I am a glow worm." -Winston Churchill

4. What do you want to be when you grow up?

A microbiologist.  Or a wedding dress consultant if I didn't have the pressure of actually selling anything.

5. If you were an elephant, what color would you want to be? (I would want to be a pink elephant with green polka dots.)

I'm going to say pink and white striped, with the option to change to aqua, red, and white stripes when I get wet.

6. You are an Olympian....what sport are you competing in?

Synchronizing diving!  I think that is the coolest thing . . .

7. If you have 5 minutes of free time at home, what do you find yourself doing?

This week?  Fiddling with my blog design.  On a normal basis?  Usually reading blogs or reading a book.

8. Top item on your bucket list.

See my kids come to Jesus.  After that, it's "Go To Italy".

Italy GondolierSlideshow

9. What one feature sets you apart from everyone else?

Physically?  Probably my hair and my height.  Ever since my hair decided to frizz up in middle school I've been a hair non-conformist, in a conformist type of way.  No crazy colors, but I just don't know that many people who keep their hair short.  I tried the long hair thing last year and it just wasn't for me, so it's back to my short 'do now.  The other thing is my height.  I'm only 5'8", but you'd be surprised how many people you are taller than at that height.  Especially when you wear heels (which I do).  But I don't know, maybe you guys should tell me?

10. Are you a crier, screamer or in-betweener? Describe how you most commonly express your emotions.

Negative emotions: I'm ashamed to say probably both, depending on the situation and what exactly is upsetting me.  Positive emotions: Probably both, depending on the situation and what happy thing has happened.  So I guess that makes me an in-betweener!  But most of the time I'm neither crying nor screaming, which I think is probably a good thing.

And it is super-late, everyone is in bed except me, so I'm not going to list recipients here.  But here is a list of questions, and I'll tag a few people on Twitter!  If you don't follow me you should!  There's my little self-promotion plug for the day.

Feel free to snag these questions and answer them on your blog or in the comments, even if I don't tweet you later!

1. When were your "awkward" years (come on, we all had them).  What made you feel awkward?

2. Favorite memory?

3. If you had an hour, all to yourself, what would you do, where would you go, who would you see, what would you eat?  (An hour may not seem like a long time to some of you, but when you have preschoolers, it is!)

4. Favorite book/magazine?

5. What has been the defining moment of your life so far?

Vlog - 11 More Questions

Alright, one more blog to answer Brittney's questions as part of The Liebster Award nomination!  Thanks again Brittney!

I had fun recording these videos to answer the questions.  I love watching vlogs because it makes me feel like I know the blog author a little better.  I think my videographer skills could use some work though.  I'll see what I can do.

Here is the list of questions I answered, with the corresponding place in the video.  So you can skip to the questions that interest you if you want.

Vlog - 11 Questions

I'm doing a vlog today.  A couple of sweet bloggers, Chamel and Brittney, awarded me with the Liebster blogger award!  The Liebster award is intended for blogs with under 200 followers, but I totally think I still qualify, because (1) at the time of receiving the award I had less than 200 followers on Bloglovin, and (2) I have less than 200 followers on Twitter.

So I qualify.  And I'll probably use the same rules when I pass the award back out.

Part of the award is answering a list of questions from the person who gave it to you, and I thought it would be fun to do a vlog for the questions!  So that's what I did.

A couple things to note:

1. I'm talking really fast and probably didn't explain myself the best because I was trying REALLY hard to keep this video under five minutes . . . and I failed.  But only by a minute.  Forgive how rushed this feels.

2. I was debating straightening my hair before the blog, but decided to forget it.  There is one little curl that is sticking out from my head and it's driving me nuts.  Oh well.

3.  I really didn't take a lot of time to think through all my answers for this, so you get the improv version of me - ha!  Which is probably more fun and conversational anyway.  Because most people don't rehearse their conversations before they have them.

4. All those loud hammering noises are from Derek hammering nails outside the window.  He's fixing our porch because it was rotting away, and it's become a huge project.

5. Here are the questions I'm answering in the vlog, along with their corresponding start points in the video - that way you can skip to the questions that most interest you.  Please take advantage of this information and skip over my rambling to your heart's content!  It won't hurt my feelings.

The questions for today are from Chamel, and they were good ones!  Another blog with the questions from Brittney coming soon!

Also, I think some person sits behind a computer and hand picks the most unflattering frame for the previews on these videos, just to annoy me. *sigh*

Award Recipients

Alright, time to pass out some awards! I've been a major slacker for the past several months on accepting and passing these awards on, so I'm finally getting caught up.

These awards basically require you to share 7-10 random facts about yourself and thank the person who gave you the award - which I did in Monday's random post. Then you can pass them on to 5-7 other bloggers!

I always have a terrible time picking winners for these awards - because I really do love all the blogs I read. But I don't think I've given some of these ladies awards before, and it's been a while since I passed awards on to some of them. So, without further ado, here are the recipients!

Stylish Blogger Award

I've Got Nothin'

I feel like such a bad blogger lately. My normal goal is to think of a good, thoughtful post for Mondays to get the blogging week off to a good start. Yep. That hasn't happened in quite a while. Everything is just too busy around here - I hardly have time to breath on the weekends lately, much less write a blog post.

So I'm afraid, my friends, that "this is all I got".

Here are some of the thoughts running through my mind today.

1. I cut my foot twice in the same spot within about a week. No sooner had the first cut healed than I went and cut it again! And I don't even know how I did it - I just looked down, and my foot was bleeding. Isn't it supposed to be a bad thing when you can't feel when you've injured yourself? Maybe I need to start doing nightly inspections of high-risk body parts.

2. I think I love Dreft laundry detergent. My project over the weekend was to try to get all of our little guy's clothes washed in a baby-friendly detergent - I got about 2/3 of the way through. But my entire house smelled so fresh and clean while I was doing laundry with Dreft - a "new baby" fresh smell. I've been snuggling the clothes that I've already washed up to my face (so soft!), and just breathing in that wonderful new baby scent - because it's the same fragrance I'll be inhaling when I'm snuggling my little man after he's born. I love it!

3. I have a full day of shopping ahead of me today. I have to buy some items that we still need for the nursery, buy a shower gift for my co-worker, and pick up some other random things that we need all of a sudden. Shopping is a great way to get in my daily exercise (all that walking, you know), but I have a hard time with these marathon days lately - if I walk too much I get these sharp pains in my middle. Maybe just ligaments? I don't know, but it can't be a good thing. I think I'm going to have to start breaking up these shopping trips into more manageable chunks.

4. I was thinking about what outfit to dress our baby in for his "going home outfit", and I then started thinking about my "going home outfit" - and I have no idea what to wear home from the hospital. I was advised by our hospital tour guide not to bring pre-pregnancy pants to the hospital, because I'll try to get them on, then they won't fit, then I'll cry. But I'm not sure I really want to go home in maternity clothes - that would just be depressing. Maybe I should just go with a skirt or something. For all you ladies who have had a baby, what did you wear home from the hospital?

5. I have a doctor's appointment today too, and I have some questions for her. I want to know which way the little guy is turned. I'm wondering if they can feel my stomach and guess as to whether he's head down or not? Supposedly he's supposed to be head down by now, but every day he jabs me in my sides quite forcefully - I don't think he can get that much power coming from a head-down position.

6. My co-worker and I are due about a month apart from each other, and we're having a joint shower over lunch break at work this Thursday! I'm excited - it should be fun! I need to find something to give my co-worker though - she's having a little girl in April. So many girls being born this year - does anyone else feel that way, or is it just me?

7. Pride and Prejudice is a great movie. One of my favorites. While I was working on repairing a baby quilt that The Dog (aka: Harvey) chewed a hole through, my wonderful hubby made me dinner and and sneakily put Pride and Prejudice into our DVD player - because he knows I love it, and that I haven't watched it in forever, and he wanted me to have a nice evening. He's the best!

8. I've received three blog awards over the last several months that I've never passed on. I know, it's pitiful. If I keep slacking on accepting awards like this my sweet blog friends are going to stop passing them on to me.

From Ashlyn at Miss Magnolia. This is a pretty new blog to me, but Ashlyn seems like such a fun person!

From Melanie at Country Roads. I've been following Melanie's blog for several months now, and she is so sweet! Her blog is real and fun - I like that.

From Vicky at The Johnson's. Vicky's blog is semi-new to me, but Vicky seems so sweet and smart and I'm really anjoying getting to know her better through her blog!

All of the above awards require sharing 7-10 random things about yourself, and passing them on to other bloggers. The random things I shared in this post aren't necessarily about me, but please accept them as my "randomness" requirement.

I'm running out of time now, so I'll have to announce the next recipients in another post. Thanks for your patience (in advance, you know), and thank you to all of the sweet ladies who passed these awards on to me! Each one cheered up my day when I received it from you, and I'm flattered that you chose to give them to me.

I'll try to get back on the ball this week and get them redistributed.

9. Since posting my complaint about spammers on Friday, I've received 12-14 new "anonymous" comments, with ridiculous compliments and no link, most of them on that Shutterfly Christmas card post. They're just taunting me now. I'm seriously considering turning off anonymous comments for my blog. Those few people who I know in real life that comment through the "anonymous" commenting feature are the only thing stopping me.

That's all for now, Folks . . .
