Two Ways My Two Year Old Makes Me A Better Mom

I was sitting on the couch, reading, when he toddled over to me.  “Mama, sit by you!” He requested.  It cracks me up how full his sentences are at not quite two years old.

I put the baby down and pulled him up next to me, his little fists dragging his blanket and snake stuffed animal up with him.  I thought he would turn around and sit down on the couch with me, but instead he stayed facing me, grinning.  Then I heard little lips smacking, and something soft tapping my arm.  I looked up from my book to find a stuffed snake “nibbling” at my arm.

Clyde At One Year Old! (Plus One Year Photos)

I got a treat for you today guys - in honor of Clyde's first birthday this past weekend, I thought I'd share some one year old pictures on my main blog!  I usually post all my pictures of the kids on my photo blog, but this is a special occasion.  We are going to get some professional one year old pictures taken with my friend Danae (she always does such a fantastic job), but I decided to use Clyde's birthday as an excuse to practice my own photography skills, and I like how they turned out.  So I am sharing a few of my favorites of my adorable boy - prepare yourselves for the cuteness!

You can still see the rest of the photos on my photo blog (I'll send out links in my next newsletter, so sign up if you haven't already)!

Clyde is officially one year old!

The last month has been so fun, and Clyde has changed so much.  He now crawls on his hands and knees everywhere, instead of his belly crawl, and I'm kicking myself because I don't think I ever got a video of the belly crawl.  He still pulls himself up on the furniture all the time, but no standing or walking by himself yet!

He has been talking so much more this month - he tries to copy the words we say, and he calls me all the time by saying "Ma-MA!" (emphasis on the second "ma").  His other favorite words are still "dada", "dog", "hi", and "yeah".

We started giving Clyde more table foods this month, and we introduced some of the foods you are supposed to avoid until a year, like dairy.  He loves eating "real" food!  He has started eating so much more this month.  It's so funny to watch him, because when he eats he just stuffs things in his mouth as fast as he can.  I'm just amazed at how quickly he jumped into eating table food.

He is really developing a little sense of humor, and he likes to play games with me - like peek-a-boo.  Sometimes he'll shake his head back and forth while I'm talking to him because he thinks it's funny!  When he starts laughing hard it is so cute - it's kind of like a shout-laugh, the kind that comes from your throat and that place behind your ears, if that makes sense.  It sounds just like every baby laugh sound effect you might have heard, and it's adorable!

I think one of the cutest and funnest things that he started doing this month was that he started singing.  I wasn't there the first time he did it, but Derek was, and Clyde started trying to sing along to "Jesus Loves Me" in his little baby language - but he was kind of carrying the tune!  I couldn't believe he could start singing that young, but we sing "Jesus Loves Me" every night, so it shouldn't surprise me that he figured it out.  It warms my heart to think that is the first song he ever tried to sing!

He also started giving kisses this month - he blows kisses pretty well, and the other day I picked him up and he just leaned over and kissed my shoulder (the closest part of me to him) three times!  Three little open-mouth kisses with the "mah!" sound!  It was the sweetest moment.  He is generous with his little kisses, and I love every single one!

Baby Clyde,

My boy, you are almost not a baby anymore!  I can't believe you are one year old!  This last year has been such a blessing with you in it, Sweet Boy.  You are such a sweetheart, and you make me smile every time I see your happy little face.  It is amazing how quickly you are learning new things, and it is so fun for me to watch you learn.  It makes me look forward to this next year with you even more - all the things you will learn, like walking, talking, and singing (more).  Most of all I'm looking forward to watching you learn more about Jesus, Clyde-Boy.  My deepest wish is that you and your siblings will come to know Him too.  I am so grateful He gave you to us, that He chose me to be your mama.  I'm the luckiest lady in the world.

Love you always, Sweet Boy, and I can't wait for all the future birthdays I get to spend with you!

Love,
Mama

Clyde At Seven Months

Clyde is seven months old!  It feels like the last month has gone by really fast.

DSC 6528blog

This was a big month for Clyde - we started solid foods!  We got kind of a late start because of a stomach bug.  He was barely eating r a whole week, and he was more fussy than normal.  I was really worried that he was developing milk sensitivity, but then it seemed to clear up a bit, so I started him on rice cereal.

Oh my goodness, he loved it!  He knew what to do right away and practically dove at the spoon.  With the other two I felt like they took a little time to figure out how to swallow, but he just gulped it right down.  He is a very enthusiastic eater, and it's just adorable!  We got his first taste of solids on camera, and I'm so glad we did, because it was so cute.  We've also tried green beans so far, and he likes those too.  He is already used to eating his solid food, and he is more fussy if I forget to feed him his cereal!

He is growing out of a lot of his six month clothes now, and when we took him for his checkup he was 26 inches long and almost 16 lbs.  He is wearing size 2 shoes, and size 2 diapers.

He is very interested in his toys, and he still attempts to scoot toward his toys when he can't reach them.  So far he usually ends up scooting backward, but this week (11/11) he got up on his hands and knees all by himself!  We made a big deal of it, and he looked so proud.  I was impressed that he figured this out, because the other two figured out a scoot-crawl first, and then got up on their hands and knees - but Clyde figured out the hands and knees thing first!  I am excited for him to learn to crawl, but I also am having a hard time with him growing so fast.

DSC 6515blog

As Clyde is getting bigger, he is playing with Wyatt and Gwen so much more.  They take such good care of him, and they like to play with him.  Sometimes they get Clyde laughing so hard, and it's just adorable!  He has this clear, throaty-sounding laugh, and I love it.  One of the best sounds in the world.

I think we are almost done with nursing, and it's bitter sweet for me.  With the other two I decided when to wean, and this time it's just kind of happening without my having as much of a say in it.  Clyde doesn't want to nurse as much, and my supply is going away.  We had a couple sweet times when he was sick and wanted the comfort, and I'll always remember those moments with him, because it's been more difficult to nurse since then.  We still get good snuggles in when I feed him a bottle though.

DSC 6526blog

Clyde has these cute little quirky things that he does - one of them is sticking his tongue out and curling it.  It's so funny and cute!  He also rolls his tongue around a lot while he is eating, and I love watching him eat.  His thing lately has been nodding his head.  He'll just randomly start nodding his head up and down.  I'm not sure where he figured out how to do that, or why he does it, but it's funny when you are talking to him and he starts nodding his head!

He is still my little buddy, and likes to hang out with me best, but he is becoming more happy to be held by other people (as long as he still knows where I am).  He has such an adorable dimpled grin, and he almost always smiles at everyone who looks at him!  He wins everyone over with his little grins.  I think his personality is more of a shy ham - he likes it when people pay attention to him, as long as he is in a comfortable situation.  I am loving watching his personality develop!

My Sweet Clyde,

I can't believe how much you have grown!  You have gone from my little tiny baby who didn't want to be held by anyone but me, to this sweet, social baby who always seems to steal the show without even trying.  Your little smiles light up my day, and it's hard to even feel tired or stressed when you give me a happy grin.  I love how you are understanding and enjoying games more and more, and your little laughs are the cutest things!  You have such a sweet, almost humble personality, and I think you will be one of those people whom everyone can't help but like.  I love you Baby Boy, and I can't wait to see what the Lord has in store for you as you grow up (but just don't grow up too fast).

Love Always,

Your Mama

Clyde At Six Months

DSC 6055blog

My youngest baby turned a half year old!  I'm still in denial.

(To see all the cute pictures of my boy, you can request to follow my photo blog by clicking the button to the right and filling out the form).

Clyde is just growing and getting more cute every day.  This month Clyde learned to sit up by himself!  He is not super-stable yet, but he did sit up for a good minute by himself on October 8th.  He is so into his toys lately, and I just love the fascinated look on his face when he is playing.  It's so cute!

Sleep is not the best right now - he usually wakes up at 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM.  I just remember going through rough patches from 4-8 months with Wyatt and Gwen, so I'm just dealing with it.  This is really a relatively short period of time, and I know by the time he is a year he'll be sleeping through the night, so I guess I'm just not worrying about it as much as I did with the other two.

We are still nursing a couple times a day, and we use formula the rest of the time.  I'm probably going to hang on to nursing as long as I can this time around - Clyde might be my last baby, and I am just not ready to let go yet, even though my supply is dwindling.  One of my favorite things is the way he scratches at my collar bone while he nurses - it doesn't hurt.  He does it when he's sleepy, and it's so sweet.

We have not started solids yet, but we probably will in the next week or so.  He is starting to be interested in what everyone else is eating, so I think he's ready.  Is it weird that I am not though?  I just feel like he should still be my itty bitty baby, and starting solids makes him seem like an older baby.

He has such a happy personality - everywhere we go I get comments about how happy he is!  He smiles very easily, even when he is crying, which is pretty funny.  I say that it always seems like he is either upset or happy, with no real in between, but that is not as true as it used to be - he is becoming more content to be by himself too.  His new thing is sticking his tongue out while he smiles, and I think it is so funny!

----

My Sweet Boy,

I can't believe you are already six months old!  You are closer to being one year old than you are to being brand new.  I love watching you grow, and your personality development is so exciting, but I wish I could just freeze time.  You are growing too fast.  I love your happy smiles, and the way you jabber to yourself while you play.  I love how you snuggle in and just relax in my arms when you are eating while you "knead" my collar bone with your cute little fingers.  I think it is so funny how you can be crying, but you still smile when you see me.  You are such a happy boy, and I hope you never lose that!  You bring so much extra joy into our lives, and we are so lucky to have you, Baby Clyde!  I love you so much.

Love,

Your Mama

Clyde At Five Months

Note: More pictures of Clyde on my photo blog - request to follow with the button in the sidebar!

(Cute little baby jeans and shoes.)

Clyde is five months old!  And I am horribly late on this monthly update.

We went to his four month checkup on the 28th, and I found out that Clyde is only in the 8% for weight!  I didn't realize he was so little!  He is about 58% for height, so he's long and skinny.

I think the biggest development this month is that he is really into toys now!  He focuses on them and tries to grab at them.  He grabs his feet and stares at his hands sometimes, and when I put him down to play on his stomach he fails his arms and legs so hard, trying to figure out how to move!  He is really liking standing lately, and he is fairly stable, which really impresses us - Derek is also pretty sure he is even more strong than the other too at this age.  He's not close to sitting yet, but I think we are going to practice over the next month so I can get him ready for his next set of pictures.

He is a very happy baby, and his little baby giggle is hilarious - it just makes me smile every time.  I love the sound of it.  I feel like for a while Clyde was either smiling or crying at all times, but I feel like he has had more middle ground lately, where he'l just hang out. If I'm in sight though, he still fusses until I pick him up (he has me figured out).  Derek and I laugh because sometimes if we aren't holding him and he wants to be held, he'll cry, and make this "oh" sound and just give us this desperate face - like his little world will just be shattered if I don't pick him up right that second.  I can't even explain it, but it's funny and cute and sad all at the same time.  He has us figured out.

He has started giving me baby kisses this month!  He loves to gnaw on my chin, but this month he started grinning and then giving me big, slobbery, open-mouthed kisses all over my face.  I love it so much!

It's been really cute watching the kids interact more as they get older, and Derek told me there was an evening when I was out when all three of them were just playing with each other and laughing so hard!  I've seen them making each other laugh and it's so cute.  I love that these sweet little ones fill our house with so much laughter!

-------------

My Sweet Clyde,

You are growing so much, Sweet Boy!  I feel like you have changed so much this month.  I love watching you play.  You are so interested in toys and trying to move, and I love watching you get so focused on your goal - it's adorable!  Another favorite thing is when you fall asleep in my arms in the afternoon - the other two kids are usually down for naps or quiet time, and you just snuggle in with me and fall asleep.  Then I study your little features, your eyelashes brushing your cheeks, your tiny nose, your perfect little lips.  It's our time together, and I love that we have that.  And finally, I am loving your slobbery, wonderful baby kisses this month!  I know you are really trying to give me a kiss because you just smile and press your open mouth against my cheek in a kiss, and I treasure every single one!
I love you so much Sweet Boy, and I hope you always know how special you are to me!

Love,

Mama

Clyde's Newborn Photos

I am finally getting around to posting Clyde's newborn photos!  I am also sending out his birth announcements in the next week or two. . . even though Clyde is almost 4 months old.  Better late than never, right?

Anyway, my friend Danae took his photos, and they turned out so adorable!  I love the props and poses she used, and she captured his newborn sweetness perfectly.

Clyde At Three Months

Note: The full update on Clyde, with pictures, is on my photo blog - you can request to follow it here, or follow me on Instagram for occasional pics.

Clyde is three months old!

(My and my boy, getting some snuggle time on on the 4th of July.)

We took him in to the doctor for his two month checkup, and found out that he is over 11 pounds!  I forget how many ounces - I want to say 2 ounces, but I lost the sheet, so I can't check for sure.  We are about to switch him to size 1 diapers.  He is in mostly 0-3 month clothes, though a couple 3-6 month outfits are starting to fit.

A few things that happened this month:

-We got him circumcised.  Poor boy.  We couldn't do it in the hospital because our doctor was out of town.  Then we couldn't do it at his two week checkup because I was on blood thinners, and Clyde was bleeding too much from the needle prick - so we didn't want to risk his circumcision bleeding too much.  We were finally able to do it, and he was inconsolable for 45 minutes.  If I ever have another boy and our pediatrician is unavailable, I'm just going to ask a hospital doctor to do it at birth.  I don't know why I didn't think of that at the time.

-We left him for the first time to go on a date!  He got to spend some quality time with Gramie and Poppa!

-He rolled over from his stomach to his back on July 5th!  It was mostly an accident, but I'm counting it.

-He started laughing on July 3rd!  It sounded like a little laugh/hiccup, and it was so cute.  He has laughed several times since at Derek, and once or twice at me.  I love the baby giggles.

-He started getting over his colic!  We didn't do anything different, I think he is just starting to outgrow it.  Over the last two weeks he has just started crying a lot less, and smiling a lot more.

-We tried out his Bumbo seat for the first time!  He looks pretty adorable in it.

He is still sleeping pretty well - he will usually go an 8 hour stretch at night.  His doctor is very impressed.  Where we are having trouble is with falling asleep.  He usually has to be asleep or mostly asleep before I put him down or we have to go in multiple times to give him a pacifier.  I don't like that he needs his pacifier to fall asleep.  My other kids found their thumbs, and that was so much easier, so I'm holding out hope.  I'm thinking once Derek starts traveling I'm going to start attempting to get him to go to sleep on his own - that way if it is a disaster, only one of us is losing sleep.  I also think I'm a little better at the sleep training (sorry Babe!), so we'll see how it goes.

What I'm loving most this month?  Clyde's sweet little personality is starting to show more now that the colic is clearing up!   He loves Wyatt and Gwen - all they have to do is look at him, and it's ear-to-ear.  He likes to look around more and more, and he seemed to be a fan of the bumbo seat when we tried it.   He likes to be tickled.  He gives me this huge grin whenever I kiss his cheek.  He is so happy in the morning, or when his tummy is full, and he'll just smile at anyone who comes near him.  I love my sweet, happy boy.

--------------------

My Little Baby Clyde,

Sweetie, your personality is showing through more and more this month, and I love it!  You have a smile for everyone, and you love it when people talk to you.  I think you are going to be sociable, but you still like to be with me best.

I think mornings are my favorite time with you.  You usually wake up once around 4:00, and then you'll sleep until 7:00 or so - and then I bring you into bed with me, and we snuggle and snooze for a little while longer.  Eventually you'll get squirmy, and I'll say "good morning", and you give me that biggest smile possible and talk to me with your sweet baby coos.  It's a time for just me and you, to smile and talk and play and tickle.  I love those moments, sweet boy.  Sometimes I wish you would stay little forever.

I love you more than all the mosquitos in the summer (and that's saying something).

Love Always,
Mama

Baby Things

DSC 4406blog

Shortly after Clyde was born I was making our bed, and I found one of those little blue and pink striped hats that they give you at the hospital tucked between the sheets.

It wasn't a big thing, but it struck me in that moment that I hadn't seen one of those hats lying around in a while.  In a short 16 months all the baby hats, pacifiers, swaddle blankets, and bottles had disappeared from our house, and seeing that baby hat in an unexpected place jolted me.

This time is so fleeting.  My babies are growing up day to day, and the baby things vanish one by one.  I don't recognize the last day I use the hospital baby hat.  I don't realize it's the last day we need to use the swaddle blankets.  I don't notice the last day my child plays with the baby rattle.  I don't notice until it's over.

It made me realize again that I have to cherish all those little baby things, because soon all my kids will be toddlers with no little hats to be seen.  I need to appreciate all the Hot Wheels cars and princess books scattered around my house right now, because the day will also come when I find a Lego under my couch and realize again that the years sneaked by when I wasn't looking.

My house might look like Babies 'R' Us exploded now, but there will come a day when all of these things will just be a memory.  I want to notice.  I want to see them.  I want to remember to love them while my kids are little.

While the baby things are here.

My sweet Clyde boy is 2 months old!

I looked at him the other day and told Derek that I thought he had doubled in size in the last two days.    All of a sudden he just seems so much bigger!  We haven't been to the doctor yet, so I don't know how much he weighs, but I'm really curious to find out.  The biggest difference to me is that his legs don't look scrawny anymore.  He has filled out a lot.

Clyde is in 0-3 month clothes, and still in newborn size diapers.  I tried some of his smallest shoes on his feet the other day, and while they looked absolutely adorable, they are still a bit too big!

Poor boy still seems to be a bit colicky, on and off.  The gas relief drops don't seem to help much, and though we tried probiotic drops, I don't think I was consistent enough for them to make a big difference.  We picked up some gripe water, and that seems to be the thing that helped the most, though we still have some rough days.

Clyde is a wonderful sleeper!  It is such a blessing to have a third baby who sleeps so well.  He has been sleeping through the night (i.e.  going 8 hours without eating) pretty consistently since he was about a month old!  The secret seems to be keeping his room really warm, because if it's too cold he won't sleep well at all.  Occasionally he'll have a rough night where he just won't go to sleep (related to his stomach aches), but most of the time he'll go to bed at 8-9 PM, wake up around 4-5 AM, and then sleep another 2-3 hours.  Not too shabby at all.

DSC 4579blog

Wyatt and Gwen still love Clyde!  Gwen will randomly go up and give him a kiss, and if he loses his pacifier she tries to stuff it back in his mouth.  She likes to pat him on the head too, and always looks so proud of herself when we tell her she's being sweet to Clyde!  Wyatt is also so sweet and gentle with him.  The other day he surprised me by asking to hold Clyde again, so I settled him down on the couch with Clyde on his lap.  After a little while Clyde started getting fussy, so I was going to try to help Wyatt, but Wyatt held up a hand and said "Let me hold him," and then proceeded to try to calm Clyde down with his pacifier.  I thought it was pretty cute that he wanted to take care of Clyde all by himself!

Clyde also started smiling on May 13th!  He had a couple smiles before then, but we weren't sure they were the real thing - but on the 13th, I knew.  He has smiled occasionally over the last month, but in the last week he has been smiling at us so much more!  His smile is just too adorable - he has such cute little cheeks, with amazing dimples!  I love it.

He "talks" to us every now and then, and it's always in such a quiet, sweet way.  That is probably how I would describe his personality so far, quiet and sweet.  He is also a complete snuggle bug, and he loves to be held.  He seems partial to being held by me, but he is starting to be more open about snuggling with other people too!  If he can't have me, Derek is his next pick for sure. It is so cute to see him fall asleep in Derek's arms, but I also secretly love that he often wants me to hold him.

------------------

My Little Clyde,

You are growing, Sweet Boy!  I can't believe it's been two months since you joined our family.  You are such a sweet baby, and your smile just lights up the room!  I think if I had to pick two favorite moments from the past month, having you look at me and smile and try to talk to me is definitely one of them!  It's just so adorable, and the little sounds you make are so individual to you.  They literally sound like a "coo", and they make me think you have such a gentle, sweet disposition already.

My other favorite moment is probably just any time you fall asleep in my arms.  I love how you just drape your little arms and legs off to the side and pass out.  Or if you are tucked in instead, I love how you snuggle your nose up against my skin.  I like feeling your soft hair tickling my chin.

I'm so thankful to have you in my life, sweet baby.  I am so blessed to be your mama.

Love You Always,

Mama

Clyde At One Month

My sweet Clyde is 1 month old!

Sheesh, that last month went fast.  I still feel like he is brand-new - and he is, but it's weird to me that I can now count his age in months instead of weeks.  He's changed so much already.

He has really good neck strength, especially for being so little!  Even when he was a day old he was trying to hold his head up, and he has been getting better at it.  He lifts his head up, and his eyes open wide, and his little forehead wrinkles, and it's the cutest thing ever (I'm pretty sure I've used that phrase for all of my kids at some point - they all are just the cutest things ever).

I love his little arms and legs - they are so wrinkly.  I say they are "scrawny", but I mean that in the best sense - they are just so tiny, and skinny, with itty bitty little muscles, and it's cute!  And can we talk about his hair?  I think it might be curly, because right after his baths it curls a little on the ends.  When it's clean it's fuzzy, and stands up from his head.  I love it.  It's pretty thick in the back and thinner in the front, so it's hard to see how much hair he has in pictures.

One of the cutest things he does right now is "fake" eat.  When he is eating, or sucking on a pacifier, sometimes he'll spit the pacifier out but he'll still make a sucking motion with his lips.  It looks like he's sucking on his own lip or tongue, and he'll do that for a full minute sometimes before he realizes there is nothing actually in his mouth.  It's accompanied by little kissing noises sometimes, and it's so adorable!  When he first did it I thought he was trying to fake me out - he was done eating, but it looked like he was pretending he still was so that he could snuggle a little while longer!  I think it's so funny.

Sleep is going pretty well.  He has had a few nights where he wakes up every couple hours, but most nights he'll go at least one five hour stretch.  We keep his room warm with a space heater and play his ocean noises, and he settles down pretty well.  Our roughest times seem to be in the morning, and sometimes right before bed.  He will cry for no apparent reason and I know that his stomach is bothering him.  I'm not sure if it's something that I'm eating?  It makes me so sad.  He always calms down when I pick him up and snuggle him, like he expects me to make it better.  We've started using infant gas relief drops, and he seems to be doing slightly better.

He is such a snuggly baby!  I am so glad he is a snuggle bug, because it's just my favorite thing ever.  I love feeling his little head tucked under my chin, feeling his little breath whispering against my skin.  It's so precious.  I will miss this when he gets bigger and doesn't snuggle as much, so I'm soaking it up while I can.

---------------------

My Little Clyde,

I love you, my sweet boy!  I can't believe how much you have changed in a month's time.  I may or may not have cried a little last night over how big you have gotten already.

You make the sweetest little expressions, and I love the way you calm down so quickly when I pick you up.  You are my baby, and you know I'm your mama.  I love it when you fall asleep in my arms.  I love watching you wake up - you stretch out your little arms and crane your neck, raise your eyebrows and then peek open one eyelid to look at me.  You love to sleep with your hands by your face.  You love to be warm.

When you are awake, you are so alert.  You look around, sometimes with a happy curious look on your face, sometimes with a concerned look, but you are taking it all in.  You love your swing, but if you think we left you alone in the room you get upset until you realize that we are still there.  You love being around people, and you don't like things to be too quiet.

I just love getting to know you and your sweet personality, Clyde.  You are such a precious baby, my little gift.  I love you so much more than I can tell you.

Love,

Mama

Maternity Pictures With Clyde! Part One

I was so excited that my friend, Danae, was able to take our maternity pictures for this baby!  Danae is a professional photographer, and if you remember she couldn't take my pictures with Gwen because she was on maternity leave with her own sweet girl.   But she is my favorite photographer and always does such  great job, so I was really looking forward to having her take pictures with this pregnancy!

I was really wanting our pictures to have a springtime "feel" to them, even though we were taking them in winter.  I thought my hopes were going to be dashed when we woke up the morning of the shoot and there was six inches of snow on the ground!  Thankfully most of it had melted by the afternoon, and these pictures are the result.  I love the little bits of snow on the ground, because that is exactly what springtime is around here - it snows, it melts, it's nice weather, it repeats.

I had a really hard time narrowing the pictures down, because I love every single one she took!  But I did my best.  Here are the first half of the pictures!

One thing I love about having Danae and her husband, Scott, take our pictures is that they are so good at getting the kids to play to the camera - not all photographers are good with kids, but they are great!  We had them take Clyde's newborn pictures too, and I can't wait to see them!

They got so many cute ones of Wyatt and Gwen, and of all of us as a family, at our maternity session though.  Those are coming up next!  Stay tuned.

Clyde's nursery reveal is coming eventually - I'm trying to decide whether to add some name art to his walls before I write the post, but I thought I'd go ahead and share the quilt I made for him now!

I've made quilts for both Wyatt and Gwen, so I knew I was going to make a quilt for Clyde too.  I like making my own quilts/crib bedding, because I just usually don't find pre-made crib sets that I really like - this lets me pick my own colors and fabrics.  They don't turn out perfect by any means, but I'm not entering it in competitions or anything - I just do it for my babies!  I have fun with it!

I got the idea for this block-y quilt from this book.  I'm not really a traditional quilter (I wouldn't really call myself a quilter at all, really, I just make them when we are adding to our family).   I like big, chunky pieces because it's so much faster to sew together!  This book has tons of fun ideas for modern-looking designs.

I just sketched out how I wanted mine to look, figured out how big all the pieces should be, then I arranged them all on the floor before I sewed them together to make sure I liked the way it looked with the different fabrics and patterns.

After I put all the pieces together I took it to my old neighbor who does the actual quilting for me.  She picked this cool flame pattern, and I like the way it looks!  After I got it back from her I just folded the extra backing over the edges and sewed it down for the border.

I really like the way it turned out, and it looks great in Clyde's nursery!

I feel like I should come up with a name for the final product, something more interesting.  "Baby Boy's Quilt" is a little boring - the colors actually reminded me of the beach, which may have influenced the theme I picked for the nursery. . .

Maybe I'll call it my "Surf's Up Quilt".  Or "Anchors Away Quilt"?  Or maybe I'll steal the baby shower theme name from Ashley and call it my "Ahoy, It's A Boy! Quilt"!  Something like that anyway.
