5 Easy Tips For Keeping A Clean House With Young Kids

5 Easy Cleaning Tips For Keeping A Clean House With Young Kids |Through Clouded Glass

I once read somewhere that it is a good idea to keep your house in a decent enough state that if someone were to ask if they could come over in fifteen minutes, you wouldn't freak out.

Whoever said that obviously did not have young children.  Between picking up toys, making and cleaning up after meals, and handling all the messy situations my kids find themselves in, sometimes I feel like most of my day is spent cleaning.  Having three kids under five will do that to you, and we're about to add another one to the mix!

Still, I have never forgotten that fifteen minute clean up goal, and I can appreciate the idea behind it.  I love finding quick cleaning ideas, because I like the idea of keeping my house in good enough order that I wouldn't be totally embarrassed if someone were to stop by unexpectedly.

Housekeeping is still something I want to maintain, even with all the little ones we have running around.  Will my house be as perfect as I could get it pre-kids?  No, but I also don't think having young children is an excuse to let your house go to shambles either.  These are a few easy cleaning tips that have helped me maintain a (relatively) clean house, even with our growing tribe.

Clear the clutter.

If you want your house to feel cleaner, I think cutting down on clutter is key.  Your coffee tables and counters can only get so clean if you are perpetually dusting around stacks of magazines, mail, or other piles.  A fair amount of my cleaning time is actually spent de-cluttering, and the result is that my house looks a lot more straightened up even before I break out the cleaning supplies.  Don't have anywhere to put the clutter?  Then you probably need to clean a few things out.

Find creative storage solutions for toys.

Toys sometimes feel like my arch-nemesis!  When you have young children, there are always some toys on the floor, and if you don't have a storage solution worked out, they will just congregate into little toy mountains scattered throughout your house.  Try to think of some ways you can creatively hide the toys.  In our house, we have a bench/toy chest, and we put most of the kids toys in that.  In the kids' rooms, we have toy boxes at the ends of the beds, or bookshelves with baskets to store smaller toys in, and we are working on teaching the kids to put their toys away when they are done with them.  It's nice that even though we are constantly battling the toys, when they are put away I don't have to see them!

Clean as you go.

Cleaning your house is a lot more overwhelming when you let everything pile up until "cleaning day".  I like the results of an in-depth cleaning day as much as the next mom, but cleaning days will never happen if I am too overwhelmed to start!  To stay on top of the mess, clean whatever you can, when you can.  If you have an extra minute, clear a clutter pile or some toys.  Keep the dirty dishes put away as you finish using them.  Do a quick wipe-down of the refrigerator while you are waiting for water to boil for dinner.  Doing little things here and there keeps your house from becoming a disaster area.

Keep disinfecting wipes handy.

Getting out all the cleaning bottles and rags and doing a thorough cleaning is ideal, but not always practical when you are a busy mom.  I love disinfecting wipes as an alternative - I have canisters of them in all the bathrooms and the kitchens, and whenever I feel like something is getting a little grimy, I grab one and wipe everything down quickly.  This keeps the dust and grime from becoming too scary between deep cleanings!

Look for convenient cleaning tools.

I love finding compact, convenient cleaning tools that allow me to pull them out and do a quick cleaning job without too much hassle.  A good example of this is the Dirt Devil® 360° Reach- I just got one, and this thing is incredibly useful!

It came in a nifty storage bag with six different cleaning heads to clean everything from the floor, to the couch, to ceiling fans.  So far I've used it to clean up the area around our wood stove, vacuum down my couches, and I even got all of those pesky crumbs out of my lazy susan (which I've been meaning to do for literally months).

I was able to do all that within ten minutes by just changing out heads, and I love how it's so easy to empty out the dust when you are done - no buying vacuum bags and filters since you can clean out all the parts yourself in the kitchen sink.

Another thing I realized while using it to clean my (very dirty) car is that it has a built in thermal protector, which I think is a useful feature - it will shut off automatically if the vacuum system starts getting too hot, so you won't accidentally burn out the motor.

I am excited to try some of the Vac&Dust tools around the house too - I'm thinking the top of the bookshelves and cabinets that I always seem to forget about!

Bottom line: Multi-functional tools are your friend, and the Dirt Devil 360° Reach is a great one for those quick, light cleaning jobs!  And you can get it on Dirt Devil's website right now for a special package price of $149.99, including an additional attachment package (valued at $75).  Only while supplies last, so if you are thinking of getting a product like this, now is a good time!

It's important to me that our house isn't always messy, because I want our home to feel "homey".  I want my kids to recall all the memories we make within these walls with that sense of well-being that comes from a house that may not be perfectly clean, but isn't a disaster area either.  Keeping ahead of the mess helps my own sanity, but I hope it will also facilitate warm memories together inside our comfortable, (mostly) clean house.

What kinds of things do you do to try to keep the mess under control?  I'd love to hear your easy cleaning ideas, especially if you have young kids!

Ha, they may have had young kids, they just had to adjust their standards! I think maybe I would add that the person who wants to come over in 15 minutes is also a mom. That helps!!!! I definitely love these tips, thanks for sharing!

I don't have any children and I already have enough trouble as it is keeping things clean and tidy in our house :P These are great tips and I should really start implementing these now so that they can become good habits down the road. Also, it's amazing what simply vacuuming can do to make a room look so much cleaner!

Awesome post!! I try to keep my house to the "15 minute" rule, but I know once I have kids, that will become so much more difficult. My favorite trick is to keep the clutter out of the house -- everything looks cleaner when there is less stuff!

I have a huge clutter problem! I'm trying to get storage bins or file folders to help organize the millions of papers floating around the house!

Great ideas! Just when I had given up on keeping up with the mess.... ;) I really do need to attempt this "decluttering" that you speak of! haha!

That dirt devil looks amazing! I love how small and compact it is. I really try to pick up as we go but lets be honest I am not very good at it LOL.

I used to crack up when I'd read those articles about cleaning the house in 15 minutes. I feel like I'm cleaning every minute of every day. There is always something out of place or dusty - makes me crazy. Great post!

I need to work on the cleaning as I go. I like that the vacuum is small and can easily be stored.

Clearing away the clutter is so incredibly useful. My one rule is that if I can't find a place for it, then I probably don't need it.

Clutter is my enemy! I am all about storage and vacuuming daily, even if it is only one room a day!

Vacuuming does make a room look so much cleaner!

That is a good rule - I have really been minimizing and clearing things out this year, and it makes everything else feel so much cleaner!

Callie Nicole said...

It is nice that it is easy to store! I love the bag it comes with, so I don't lose attachments.

Callie Nicole said...

True, I feel like I have to constantly be straightening up or things get out of control!

Thank you for stopping by, Audrey!

I feel like clearing out clutter helps so much! We've been doing a lot of cleaning out this year, and it's so much easier to clean everything when there is less stuff lying around.

Callie Nicole said...

I feel the same way! I feel like I have to constantly be cleaning something or it starts to get really bad!

Callie Nicole said...

It is really nice, especially with the bag to store all the attachments! And yes, I have to remind myself to clean as I go, because when I don't it starts to feel overwhelming!

Callie Nicole said...

Haha! Yes, decluttering is hard, but I feel like it helps a lot!

Callie Nicole said...

Yeah, I'm not counting on the 15 minutes either - but as long as I can get it looking like a tornado didn't just go through, I feel like that's a win. :-)

Callie Nicole said...

The clutter is so hard to battle sometimes! I think the next place I need to tackle is my desk.

So true! We have been decluttering a lot this year, and I feel like it makes everything look so much cleaner!

Lucky girl! :-) I recruit my husband to vacuum a lot too, but I'm not sure he particularly enjoys it. ;-)

I agree, vacuuming does make everything feel cleaner! Ha, and yes, it can be hard to keep things looking clean even without kids!

Callie Nicole said...

It is nice and compact, which I love! Thanks for stopping by, Summer!

Callie Nicole said...

I agree, the standards definitely change after kids! I think they have to, or we perfectionists would go crazy. ;-)

Dana Brillante-Peller said...

I am all for cleaning as I go along and I also have disinfecting wipes in every bathroom and the kitchen.

Leah Van Ert said...

Ooooh what a cool gadget! Never heard of it before. I'm always looking for new stuff like this. :)

Elizabeth said...

I feel like I'm in the minority here as I've never been a clean freak and my mom wasn't really either when I was little...but then again, she had 5 kids. ;) I want to believe I could become a better housekeeper, but it just doesn't come easily for me. I will choose the complicated baking from scratch over vacuuming every time, and I don't seem to have the discipline to choose cleaning first. You inspire me to try harder, but old habits are still pretty hard to break! I'm quite the pack-rat, too!

Callie Nicole said...

Yes, disinfecting wipes are the best!

Callie Nicole said...

It is really handy - I have loved it every time I used it so far!

Callie Nicole said...

It's kind of nice to not feel that cleaning compulsion! It usually hits me in spurts, and it's so much more relaxing when I am not freaking out about the mess, haha!
